Sophia Marguerite Boeschoten

Performer, artist, musician and composer Sophia lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. As a child she believed to descend from another world and practised her own religion. The landscapes of this parallel world are still the main inspiration for her artistry. By using different media (i.a. painting, sculpture, music, poetry, performance and video) Sophia creates installations and musical performances that together portray fragments of a magical inner dreamworld.

Sophia’s entire body of work can be envisioned as a set of building blocks, where each piece serves as an element that can be (re)used in new emerging works and different installations and settings. In this way, all of her works are both substantively and physically entangled into one another. At the same time, the individual works can exist independently as autonomous pieces.

Since graduating from the Royal Academy of The Hague in 2016 with a Bachelor in Autonomous Arts, Sophia has gradually integrated both theatre as her own composed music and poetry into her artistic practice. An important aspect in her artistic practice is that every music piece, poem, costume, sculpture, video and (instrumental) performance is created and carried out by the artist herself. During the more comprehensive music performances she collaborates with other musicians.

In recent years she has mainly been working on her musical compositions and two comprehensive theatrical musical performances. Both performances consist of several musical acts that integrate visual arts, theatre and music in one overarching artwork. Kill Me reflects on the inner war(s) we conduct with ourselves. You are a Star is a more comprehensive and dynamic opus in the form of a requiem.

Recently, Sophia began a third project inspired by her work on an organic farm near Amsterdam: a mini-opera Singing the Plants, dedicated to the plants she nurtures, cultivates and harvests.
